But more importantly than all that is the fact that I was once like you. At one time I was a frustrated combat athlete and didn’t know where to turn.

 

I began wrestling at the encouragement of an uncle who was a former state champ. I had never wrestled before but he made a good argument so I was excited to give it a shot.

 

I made the team but unfortunately it didn’t take long for my excitement to turn to frustration, despair and misery. When practice officially started the next week, I found out the hard way that I was not anywhere near the shape I needed to be in to dominate on the mat.

 

Every day I did all the same conditioning as the rest of the team. I did the pushups, the sit ups, the squats, the five mile jogs and when I would screw up in practice I would do more. I got sick and threw up on many an occasion but somehow I didn’t seem to be getting anywhere.

 

After my first season, doing all those hours of work each week, I was nearly just as weak and slow as I was when I started and my conditioning still sucked.  

 

How could that be? I busted my fu**ing ass!!!

 

I'm sure many of you can relate to exactly what I am talking about. Spending hours and hours trying to improve your strength and conditioning and then having nothing to show for it when you get on the mat is a horrible feeling.

The problem is, you simply can not do training programs designed for bodybuilders, or any other athletes for that matter. What you need is a program designed specifically for YOU, THE COMBAT ATHLETE. Using the same workout as the football team just isn't gonna cut it!

 

This was a mistake that I was making at the time and I had to learn that lesson the hard way.


 

I saw my uncle again that spring at a family party after wrestling season had ended and he asked how the season went.

 

“Terrible,” I said. “I got my ass kicked.”

 

To this day I can remember the blank stare he gave me. It seemed like minutes passed before he said anything. And then finally he replied simply, “Oh well, you gave it a shot. Maybe wrestling’s not for you. At least you tried.”

 

What?! Wrestling’s not for me? That’s it?! No helpful suggestions?

 

That was all he offered and I was pissed. He basically just called me a complete pussy!

As the next season approached, I started early, doing all the exact same workouts that we used to do in practice every day. Just like many of you, I was determined to out work everybody that stood in my path. I was going to show everyone what I was made of.

 

But when practice started I was still being dominated by my teammates and opponents. Unfortunately working hard just wasn't enough because, like a lot of you, I was still doing all the wrong things!

 

I simply didn't know any better... and either did any of my coaches

 

My problem wasn't that I didn’t have the skill.

 

I was actually pretty good when we did drills and practiced takedowns and the like. By the end of my second season the coach even used to pick me to demonstrate new techniques.

 

No, technique and skill were not my problem at all. My problem was that most of my opponents were faster, stronger and in better condition than I was. I couldn’t react quickly enough to defend myself optimally and when the tables were turned my opponents handled my offense as if I was moving through quicksand.

 

If somehow I managed to get someone in a pinning predicament it was no use anyway. I was usually too weak to hold them down.

 

And my endurance?


 

It sucked!
 

You see, I wasn't born with great athletic ability. Neither of my parents were athletes. They are both under 5'6" and 145 pounds. There were no gold medal winning genetics where I came from. But I have always had an undying work ethic and could usually get by on that alone.

 

No one could outwork me.

 

But somehow it just wasn't enough. I couldn't figure it out. I did all of the reccomended conditioning work and I never missed a workout.


How could I be so gassed every single time I got on the mat?

 

I struggled through the rest of my wrestling career without ever seeing the kind of dramatic improvements from my training that I expected. I never caught on to the fact that everything I had been told about improving my strength, speed and stamina was complete BS. Eventually my wrestling days came to an end and it would be another few years down the road when I began studying exercise science in college that I finally came to the realization that many of you may be coming to right this very minute...

 

I was misled for all those years and actually had my career in combat sports ruined by inferior coaching and training methods.
